This small collection consists of manuscripts of "Final chapter in the life of Billy the Kid, worst of all the bad men," published in Clayton news and Southwest plainsman and an updated manuscript of "The Last hours of Billy the Kid." The collection includes clippings of the "Final chapter" as published in the Clayton news on Billy the Kid, verdict of the coroners's jury on Billy's death, and various clippings and copies of photographs of Billy, Sheriff Pat Garrett, other people, the Courthouse and other locales in Lincoln County.

Born in Mason County Kentucky in 1850, John William Poe moved to Texas in 1868 to hunt buffalo. In the 1870s he served as town marshal for Fort Griffin, before becoming a U. S. marshal. Poe then became cattle detective for the Canadian River Cattleman’s Association, where he worked in New Mexico. In 1881, Poe accompanied Sheriff Pat Garrett and another deputy to the location of Billy the Kid, where Garrett allegedly killed the Kid.
